| Inflation Continues to Decline, Beating Forecasts | A measure of inflation followed closely by the Federal Reserve rose slightly in August but declined more than expected on an annual basis, boosting confidence in the Fed's plan to lower interest rates, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Friday. | The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.1% for the month and at an annual rate of 2.2%, lower than the 2.3% estimate, and down from July's 2.5% rate. The core index, excluding energy and food costs, also rose 0.1% for the month, although the annual rate edged up slightly to 2.7% from 2.6% a month ago. | Much of the improvement in August came as energy costs declined by 0.8%.
