| Jury mulling fate of 3 former Memphis officers charged in Tyre Nichols' fatal beating | The fate of three former Memphis officers—Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith—charged with violating Tyre Nichols' civil rights is now with a jury following a monthlong federal trial. Prosecutors argued that the officers intended to punish Nichols for fleeing a traffic stop, describing the beating as part of a common police practice known as the "street tax." Defense attorneys, however, contended that their clients acted within departmental policies, claiming the force used was not excessive. | Throughout the trial, jurors viewed graphic video footage of the incident, which showed the officers using pepper spray and a Taser on Nichols before physically assaulting him. Nichols died three days later from severe head injuries. Two other officers involved have pleaded guilty and testified against Bean, Haley, and Smith, who maintain their innocence. The case has drawn attention to the culture within the Memphis Police Department, which is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. All five officers have also been charged with second-degree murder in state court, where they have pleaded not guilty. | Read More Here | | | American Sports & Culture | | MLB wild-card Day 2 takeaways: Tigers, Royals and Padres sweep; Mets-Brewers headed to Game 3 | Here's how it all went down on a day that saw three teams exit and one matchup move on to a Thursday showdown. |
