On this day, a U.S. Army force under Colonel John Chivington attacked a peaceful encampment of Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans in southeastern Colorado. The troops killed an estimated 150-200 people, mostly women and children, despite the fact that the Native Americans had raised a white flag and were hoping for peace. The incident sparked outrage and remains one of the most tragic and controversial events in U.S. history regarding the treatment of Native American populations. |
