Senate Confirms Noem, Hegseth

The Senate confirmed South Dakota governor Kristi Noem yesterday as Secretary of Homeland Security by a 59-34 vote. She will oversee border security, immigration, emergency response, and other duties.

The Senate also confirmed Pete Hegseth as the nation's Secretary of Defense late Friday after Vice President JD Vance cast the deciding vote to break a 50-50 tie.

Hegseth had a distinguished military career with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has degrees from Harvard and Princeton and worked in veterans' advocacy before becoming a Fox News host.

Former GOP leader Mitch McConnell and Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against the nomination, along with all Senate Democrats.

Trump Halts Foreign Aid, Ramps Up Deportations

Following an executive order by President Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a halt to almost all U.S. foreign assistance on Friday. The move pauses new obligations and disbursements pending reviews "for programmatic efficiency and consistency" with U.S. foreign policy, within 90 days of the order.

Meanwhile, ICE agents launched an early morning sweep for illegal immigrants in Los Angeles yesterday. According to the New York Post, California's detention centers are expected to fill up so quickly that federal agents are searching for additional space.

In an interview with ABC News, border czar Tom Homan said the administration is planning to use military aircraft every day to carry out deportations, noting that ICE officers are free to arrest any of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, not just convicted criminals or other public safety threats.

Longshot American Wins Australian Open

American tennis player Madison Keys pulled off a shocking upset to win the Australian Open on Saturday, defeating top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in three sets.

Keys, the 19th seed, played her best tennis to win 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 in just over two hours against the two-time reigning champion. Sabalenka responded to the loss by smashing her racket and briefly leaving the court before returning.

Once a rising star in tennis after she reached the U.S. Open Final in 2017, Keys acknowledged that she needed "lots of therapy" to let go of expectations and negative emotions and unlock her best tennis.
