It sounds like science fiction, but it's very real and happens naturally in several turkey breeds.When a female turkey's egg isn't fertilized by a male, it can sometimes spontaneously begin developing into an embryo using only the mother's genetic material. The egg essentially fertilizes itself. In some domesticated turkey breeds, up to 40% of unfertilized eggs show signs of parthenogenetic development.Here's the bizarre twist: because of how bird sex chromosomes work (opposite of mammals), all turkeys born through parthenogenesis are male. The mother produces sons without any father involved. These male turkeys can grow into completely normal adults that look physically identical to turkeys born the traditional way.Scientists aren't entirely sure what triggers parthenogenesis in turkeys, but it seems to happen more frequently when females are isolated from males for long periods.
