More than one million acres have burned across Oregon and California as wildfires continue to rage due to challenging winds and storms, hindering efforts by fire officials to contain the blazes. See wildfire map here. Oregon currently has 38 active wildfires, including the Durkee Fire, which is one of the largest in the nation. Officials believe that cooler temperatures, increased humidity, and light rain, all in the near forecast, will help with containment efforts. California’s Park Fire is that state’s largest, spreading to more than 164,000 acres in two days. Authorities have arrested a Chico man on suspicion he started the fire by pushing a burning car into a gully. See photos of the fire here. | Meat and Vegetables Recalled Over Listeria U.S. health officials recalled over 200,000 pounds of Boar’s Head liverwurst and deli meats on Friday due to a listeria outbreak that caused two deaths and left three dozen people sick. A sample of liverwurst from a Maryland store tested positive for listeria, prompting the recall of other deli meats produced on the same processing line on the same day, including bologna, garlic bologna, beef bologna, beef salami, Italian Cappy-style ham, and Extra Hot Italian Cappy-style ham. Listeria concerns have also prompted the FDA to recall bagged and bulk vegetables from an Ohio-based produce company. These products were sold at Walmart stores across 18 states. The recalled vegetables include cucumbers, peppers, green beans, squash, greens, parsley, and tomatillos that were packed between July 5 and July 12. The full list of states and products can be found here. | Arsonists Target French Rail Network Arsonists disrupted France's high-speed rail network Friday morning, causing travel chaos for 800,000 people traveling to Paris, including Olympic athletes heading to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. Suspects set fire to cables at three locations around 4 a.m., paralyzing major lines connecting Paris with Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg, with a fourth attack on the Paris-Marseille line foiled by night-shift workers. French officials condemned the attacks and stated that there was no indication of a direct link to the Games. No injuries have been reported.
