The University of Texas claimed the No. 1 spot in the AP Top 25 college football poll for the first time in 16 years, dethroning Georgia.

The move comes after Longhorns backup QB Arch Manning replaced Quinn Ewers in Saturday’s game against UTSA, throwing for four touchdowns and running for another—a 67-yard scramble, the longest by a Texas quarterback since Vince Young in 2005.

Meanwhile, Georgia eked out a 13-12 win against the unranked Kentucky Wildcats.

The Longhorns received 35 first-place votes and 1,540 points, while Georgia fell to No. 2 with 23 first-place votes and 1,518 points.

Article Icon 1High-Speed Rail Authority Proposed

North Texas officials are proposing the creation of a statewide high-speed rail authority with the power of eminent domain to facilitate the acquisition of land needed for a planned bullet train route between Houston and Dallas.

Although the Texas Supreme Court ruled in 2022 that the private company behind the project has eminent domain authority, proponents of the new high-speed rail authority say it's needed to speed up securing property along the 240-mile route.

Central Texas Railway currently owns about 30% of the land needed for the project, but it was recently sued for delinquent property taxes in ten counties.

The high-speed rail project, developed in partnership with Amtrak, received a $63.9 million federal funding boost earlier this month. Its total anticipated cost has meanwhile increased from $10 billion to $33.4 billion.

Article Icon 1American Airlines Flight Attendants Get New Contract

American Airlines flight attendants have ratified a new five-year contract that includes wage increases of up to 20.5% and compensation for boarding and long waiting periods between flights.

With 95% of eligible flight attendants voting, 87% supported the deal, ending negotiations that began in January 2020, paused during the pandemic, and resumed in June 2021.

The Fort Worth-based carrier’s 28,000 flight attendants had threatened to strike earlier this year before the National Mediation Board brokered the just-approved contract.
