There are two basic categories of stringing: knotted and unknotted. Traditionally, pearls and other gemstone beads with standard-size drill holes are strung on silk with individual knots between every two adjacent beads. When a knotted strand breaks, the maximum number of beads that can be lost to the ages is two (although only losing one is more typical)--which is important with these more valuable materials. More fun, funky, or fashion-forward styles often do not lend themselves to knotted stringing, due to variance in hole size, or simply because the value doesn't justify the greater expense of hand-knotting. If such a necklace breaks, it is quite possible that many beads and pearls will bounce about.

Since breakage is inevitable with such pieces, we love to educate you on how to best wear and care for unknotted styles so you get lots of wear out of them.  We have a lot of experience in locating unusual stringing materials, finding coordinating or replacement materials, and also in recommending the best substitution for materials that cannot be replaced.
