In 46 BC, Julius Caesar looked at Rome's calendar and realized it was a complete disaster. The Roman calendar had drifted so far out of sync with the actual seasons that spring festivals were happening in summer. Something had to be done. His solution? Add 90 extra days to the year. Not spread out over future years - just dump them all into one absolutely bonkers year. 46 BC ended up lasting 445 days, making it the longest year in human history. Romans called it "Ultimus Annus Confusionis" - literally "The Last Year of Confusion." People had no idea when anything was supposed to happen. Rent was due... but when? Harvest season was... maybe? Religious festivals that were supposed to align with solstices just gave up entirely. The chaos was so extreme that some Romans thought Caesar was punishing them, while others believed the gods were angry. But Caesar's plan worked - after enduring the longest, most confusing year ever, the new Julian calendar finally put Rome back in sync with the seasons. Sometimes you have to make things worse before they get better!
