Best regards, The Security Team | | January 27, 2026 | Who will win the AFC North in 2026? | | | THE BREAKDOWN | Harbaugh Good, McCarthy Bad? | | What Happened: No one knows how a coaching hire in the NFL is going to play once the games actually begin. Some seem like slam dunks and turn out that way; the Bears winning the Ben Johnson sweepstakes comes to mind. Others last a mere one season (hello, Pete Carroll!) and leave everyone wondering how the hell that happened.
Two of the NFL's most storied franchises made coaching changes this offseason. One was met with acclaim, a multi-day news cycle detailing every step of the way of a triumphant hire. The other landed with a thud. So, why the disparate reactions? | | Why You Care: The New York Giants had to have John Harbaugh. Once the Baltimore Ravens thanked Harbaugh for his service and cut him loose, luring Harbaugh to the NFC East became Plan A, B, and C in East Rutherford. The Giants shelled out over $100 million and gave Harbs the power to re-structure the team's front office, sidelining incumbent GM Joe Schoen along the way, but it worked. The Giants got their man.
The Pittsburgh Steelers had a tougher task, pivoting away from head coach Mike Tomlin after 19 non-losing seasons in a row. After identifying three young defensive coordinators who would take over and deliver a Super Bowl trophy, many wondered if the Steelers would pivot from that formula, and they did just that. In is Mike McCarthy, a not-so-young quarterback whisperer who knows the Pittsburgh area well.
Praise for the Giants was plentiful, while heads were scratched after Pittsburgh's decision But a fascinating post by The Athletic's Jim Ayello illustrates the perceived gap between the hiring of two remarkably similar coaches.
Both Harbaugh and McCarthy have coached 18 seasons in the NFL. Both have 11 seasons of at least 10 wins. Each has lifted the Super Bowl trophy exactly once. Harbaugh has the slight edge in the wins department (180 to 174) and has a better postseason record (13-11 to McCarthy's 11-11.) Harbaugh is also a year older.
Here is where I shoot you straight and admit I thought the Giants did well to hire Harbaugh, while the Steelers' decision surprised and underwhelmed me. But is this all just PR? McCarthy was perceived to be behind the times while finishing out his days in Green Bay, his offense growing stale and failing to adapt to the changes sweeping the rest of the NFL. No pre-snap motion to create leverage and move defenders around, conservative play-calling, and questionable clock management were all criticisms thrown McCarthy's way.
As a "CEO coach," Harbaugh doesn't call plays, so his skill has been to identify and develop talent within his coaching staff, with Seattle's Mike Macdonald standing out especially. Harbaugh's Ravens teams were described as well-coached and always competent, with just three losing seasons in 18 tries. Of course, Baltimore hasn't been able to unlock success in the playoffs recently, despite the presence of two-time MVP Lamar Jackson at quarterback.
To be fair, these franchises are seeking different things from their coaches. The Steelers and Tomlin split (his call) because getting into the playoffs without being any real threat to advance became the team's ceiling. That's not good enough for an organization that counts success in trophies. Right now, the Giants would gladly sign up for nine wins and an appearance in the wild card round.
Maybe the Harbaugh hire will flame out. Maybe McCarthy will deliver a seventh Lombardi Trophy to Steel City. None of us really know! All I know is, the NFL universe was convinced one of these hires was a good idea and one was a bad idea. Why that became the narrative so quickly is fascinating. | | TODAY's LINEUP | Keep An Eye On... | | Deceiving headlines!
On ESPN's main page this morning, one of the top stories includes the tease "Gauff caught in 'private' moment" which sounds pretty bad! Until you realize that tennis star Coco Gauff was caught…smashing her tennis racket after a loss. Not so bad!
The thrust of the story is that Gauff was embarrassed to be caught destroying equipment and lamented that cameras picked it up in an area she thought was out of their sightlines. Which, fine, Gauff not wanting kids to see her go all John McEnroe is understandable. I'm just not sure that's how the headline needed to promote the story, although it got a click outta me, so what do I know. | Yesterday's most impressive performance? | | | | |
