Hey ,
I just heard that today is international quitters day. It's (apparently) the day by which 90% of people have abandoned the new years resolutions.
Let's talk about this.
After spending a lot of time in the longevity space, I've noticed a pattern that can explain why 99% of people quit within the first 2 weeks of trying something new.
They key to actually doing the things you say you're going to… actually going to the gym 3x a week, actually getting to bed on time, actually saving 30% of your paycheques… The key to these things is not motivation or discipline.
It isn't productivity planners or habit trackers. It isn't even accountability.
The key is… your environment.
You need to architect and environment that is conducive to the behaviour you want to adopt.
Perfect example: I believe that investing in a home sauna is one of the best decisions I've ever made. It's not because of the strength/sleep/HRV improvements (although those are nice)... It's because it has made my home (the place I spend most of my time) an environment that naturally promotes positive behaviour.
• I'm much more likely to exercise, because I know I can jump in the sauna right after.
• I'm much more likely to prioritize sleep, because I have a machine that can improve my sleep on command.
• I'm much more likely to spend time with my wife, because we have a dedicated space that we can unwind together.
I don't need to motivate or force or "hold myself accountable" to doing these things.. I'm simply living in an environment where it would almost be silly NOT to do these things.
Now to be clear, I'm not saying that you "need to buy a home sauna." Great ones aren't cheap, and they do take up space.
I'm simply saying that you should to have a hard look at your home and assess whether it is conducive to the behaviour you want to adopt.
Your environment is either making it much easier or much harder to do the things you want to do.
Warren.
