A Travis County judge declined to close Camp Mystic this summer following a Wednesday hearing in a case stemming from one of several lawsuits filed by the families of flood victims who perished at the camp last year.

However, State District Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ordered Camp Mystic's owners not to alter or demolish the cabins that housed the 25 girls and two counselors who died in the July Fourth flash floods.

"What we're trying to do is preserve the evidence that's there so that we can understand, so that future campers will never be put in a situation like this again," said the father of 8-year-old Cile Steward, whose body has yet to be found.

Camp Mystic's attorney highlighted the historic scale of the disaster and insisted there was little that could have been done to prevent it.

More than 850 campers have already signed up to attend Camp Mystic's Cypress Lake location this summer, while the Guadalupe River site will remain closed. Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has asked the Department of State Health Services not to renew the camp's license pending legislative inquiries.

Article Icon 1Voter Turnout Surpasses Recent Midterm Primaries

Nearly 4.5 million voters participated in Tuesday's primary elections—24% of the state's 18.7 million registered voters. That mark surpasses the 17.6% turnout during the 2022 midterm primaries and the 17% seen in 2018. It was also the first time since 2020 that Democrats cast more ballots than Republicans.

Yesterday, amid speculation that President Trump would endorse Sen. John Cornyn for reelection, Attorney General Ken Paxton said he would consider dropping out if Senate Republicans abandoned the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act, which would require identification and proof of citizenship to vote nationwide.

In Dallas County, former judge Amber Givens is poised to succeed District Attorney John Creuzot after her upset win in the Democratic primary, as no Republicans ran for the post. Givens was sanctioned for allegedly allowing a court coordinator to stand in for her during a 2021 bond hearing.

Both the Republican and Democratic primaries for Harris County judge went to runoffs. In Fort Bend County, 19-year-old Audrey Lee won the GOP primary for district clerk. "Five years ago, if you told me I was going to run for office, I would have laughed at you," she said.

In Williamson County, the Texas Supreme Court has blocked the counting of ballots cast Tuesday evening after 7 p.m. Two polling locations stayed open until 10 p.m.

Article Icon 1Dallas City Hall Fate Undecided

Following hours of public testimony and debate about the fate of Dallas City Hall, the city council voted 9-6 on Thursday to explore options to redevelop and repair the downtown site. Around 90 speakers addressed the council, which voted on the measure after 1 a.m.

The council directed city staff to develop a plan to address critical repairs, relocate 311 and 911 services and emergency operations, and move out altogether. The measure bans contractors that helped produce a report that pegged the price of repairs at more than $1 billion from bidding on projects.

Many of the speakers opposed abandoning City Hall and urged the council to take a measured and transparent approach to future plans for the site. "This is likely the biggest, most impactful, most expensive decision you may ever make in your career," Preservation Dallas Executive Director Sarah Crain said.

Others said the current structure, designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, doesn't serve the city's current needs. "Dallas deserves a City Hall that serves the next 50 years, not one that struggles under the weight of the last 50," said Sana Syed of the Dallas Farmers Market Stakeholders Association.
