As of Sept. 1, restaurants in Texas must display food allergy awareness posters to apply for or renew their certifications.

The new state law was passed in response to the death of Sergio Alexander Lopez of McAllen, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction in 2014 despite repeatedly asking restaurant staff about the safety of his meal.

After working for years to get the state to require restaurants to display warnings about food allergies, Lopez’s mother, Belinda Vaca, says she wants the federal government to pass a similar law.

A state jail in Bartlett that was shut down seven years ago is reopening as the state’s first "Innovation" Unit, aiming at equipping inmates with workforce skills and certifications.

The facility, which was privately run when a declining inmate population forced it to close in 2017, is reopening due to a rise in post-pandemic incarcerations and a new approach to criminal rehabilitation.

The unit will house around 1,000 lower-risk male inmates, who will leave with a license or certification to help them find employment.
