We can't agree more with President Trump, who yesterday posted in his familiar upper-case, "THIS EPIDEMIC OF VIOLENCE IN OUR COUNTRY MUST END, IMMEDIATELY!" But his cannot be the only voice.
Last week, our team met with officials from a task force of the Department of Justice to raise the alarm about the rising tide of anti-Christian violence and institutional bias. The DOJ expressed concern and indicated that the Administration is exploring federal resources to help protect schools and houses of worship that feel under threat. If done with religious freedom protections, this could be a positive step.
Another is a call for media of all sides, community leaders, concerned citizens, and elected officials at every level of government to stand up and say no to this violence.
Whatever a perpetrator's motive, whatever his or her political affiliation, ethnic background, self-proclaimed identity, or mental health status, resorting to violence cannot be tolerated. And we must send a message as a nation that it will not be.
But for us as Catholics, response begins where it always has—with prayer.
Our devotion to St. Michael the Archangel is not just reserved for moments of crisis. It is our daily spiritual armor. We pray for protection, but also for the grace to stand firm in worship, in witness, and in unwavering hope.
May St. Michael defend the Church—and our nation—in this hour of trial.
Go forward bravely,
