In January 1942, Soviet Air Force Lieutenant Ivan Chisov was flying his bomber over enemy territory when German fighters attacked. His plane exploded at 22,000 feet - over four miles high. With his aircraft disintegrating around him, Chisov made a split-second decision. Instead of pulling his parachute immediately (which would have made him an easy target for the German planes still circling), Chisov decided to free-fall and pull his chute at the last possible second. The problem? He passed out from lack of oxygen during the fall. Chisov plummeted unconscious toward the ground at terminal velocity - roughly 120 mph. He never pulled his parachute. By all logic, he should have died on impact. Instead, he crashed into the edge of a snow-covered ravine at just the right angle. The snow and the slope absorbed just enough of the impact. Chisov woke up in the snow with severe injuries but alive. He had fallen more than four miles without a parachute and survived. Doctors said if he'd landed anywhere else - flat ground, rocks, trees - he would have been killed instantly. Sometimes the difference between life and death is just landing in the right snowbank!
