Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is one of the most beloved Christmas characters of all time. But he was never supposed to exist. In 1939, Montgomery Ward department store asked one of their copywriters, 34-year-old Robert L. May, to create a Christmas story they could give away to shoppers as a promotional gimmick. May came up with the story of a misfit reindeer with a glowing red nose. There was just one problem: Montgomery Ward executives hated the red nose. In the 1930s, a red nose was commonly associated with alcoholics and drunks. They thought parents would be horrified by a reindeer that looked like he'd been hitting the bottle. May had to fight hard to keep the red nose in the story. Eventually, illustrator Denver Gillen created a kid-friendly version that convinced the executives to approve it. Montgomery Ward gave away 2.4 million copies of the Rudolph story in its first year. The character became so popular that it spawned a hit song in 1949 and the iconic 1964 TV special we still watch today. All because one copywriter refused to let his drunk-looking reindeer get cut from a department store promotion.
