The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Thursday that Texas could use its redrawn congressional map in the upcoming midterm elections, overturning a lower court ruling that said the new maps were racially biased.

In an unsigned order, the justices allowed midterm elections to proceed with the new map while the full appeal process, initiated by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, is carried out.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded to the order saying, "We won! Texas is officially—and legally—more red," and adding that the new maps "better align our representation in Washington D.C. with the values of our state."

After the order was announced, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Tex) announced he will not seek reelection after 30 years in Congress.

Article Icon 1Police Release 911 Calls from July 4 Floods

Kerrville police have publicly released 911 calls from the catastrophic July 4 floods at the request of eight media outlets via the Freedom of Information Act.

Kerrville Police Chief Chris McCall announced Thursday the release of over 400 un-redacted 911 calls, noting that “What you will hear in these calls is distressing. Some callers did not survive."

Records show that calls began at 2:52 a.m. on July 4 with the department receiving 106 calls between 5 and 6 a.m. alone. McCall praised the two staffers receiving calls at the time for their "incredible perseverance" and their ability to "provide assistance and comfort to every caller.”

Excerpts from calls reveal people saying they were on the roof of their home, noting how fast the water was rising, and asking when help would arrive, to which a dispatcher at one point responded, “I don’t know. I don’t know.”

Article Icon 1Red Raiders Battle BYU for Big 12 Title

Texas Tech and Brigham Young University collide this morning at AT&T Stadium in the Big 12 Championship playoff game, with both 11-1 teams competing for an automatic bid to the College Football Playoff.

The No. 4 Red Raiders defeated No. 11 BYU 29-7 at home when the teams clashed earlier this season, holding BYU's usually stout rushing attack to just 67 yards in the contest.

Oddsmakers have set the Red Raiders as roughly two-touchdown favorites today, with kickoff at 11 a.m. on ABC.

It's the first of four consecutive conference championship games today that will determine who's in and out of the College Football Playoffs.
