Abbott Issues Screwworm Disaster Declaration

Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statewide disaster declaration on Thursday in an effort to prevent the entry of New World screwworm flies into the state, as the species is spreading north from Mexico toward the Texas border.

Abbott has mobilized the New World Screwworm Response Team to "fully utilize all state government prevention and response resources to prevent the re-emergence of this destructive parasite."

Screwworm larvae burrow into the skin of living animals, often with fatal results for livestock. Eradication requires breeding sterile male screwworm flies to mate with females, who only mate once in their lifetime, thus decreasing overall population over time.

Protesters, DPS Clash at Dilley ICE Facility

About 150 protestors gathered outside an ICE detention center in Dilley this week, where a clash with Department of Public Safety officers ensued.

DPS officers arrived on the scene in riot gear and employed pepper ball grenades after the crowd refused orders to disperse. DPS said that Dilley city officials asked for assistance over a "planned and publicized protest."

Two people were arrested and crowds dispersed after nearly an hour and a half of clashing with officers.

The incident comes amid national publicity around 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos' detention at the Dilley facility. Ramos is held with his father after the pair was detained in Minneapolis by ICE agents last week.

Texas Receives $40M for Winter Storm Relief

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $40 million in disaster relief for Texas after last weekend's winter storm.

The relief is part of a $2.2 billion package delivered to 10 states in support of recovery projects, with distributions to local entities that are "most familiar with recovery activities on the ground and the needs of their communities during recovery."

The Texas Division of Emergency Management said the funds would be used for "conducting debris removal and debris monitoring."

The announcement comes as Texas steps into another weekend of historically cold temperatures.
