A major new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA) is sounding the alarm.
The statement, published last week, represents a comprehensive global review revealing critical care gaps for younger women:¹ - Premenopausal women are more vulnerable to worse outcomes for coronary syndrome than men of the same age.
- The healthcare system isn't designed to properly recognize acute coronary syndrome in younger women, it is designed to catch heart attacks caused by the usual suspects, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, plaque buildup, which many women do not show.
- Two frequently overlooked conditions predominantly affect younger women: spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) and myocardial infarction with non-obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA).
The AHA urges women to understand subtle symptoms, including chest pain, jaw or back pain, nausea and vomiting, profuse sweating, extreme fatigue, and simply feeling "not right." When in doubt, advocate for yourself and seek medical attention.
