Harden is the big name here, but let's dive into what this deal means for both sides. | | Why You Care: The major takeaway of this deal is pretty straightforward: Cleveland sees an Eastern Conference potentially there for the taking and is going all-in for 2026. However, Harden has a player option for next season, leaving open the possibility that the Cavs will get 30 or so games from The Beard before he splits. And because this is the NBA, there are some considerable salary cap considerations that are boring to discuss but important to note - basically, the Cavs could be pursuing an escape from paying millions via luxury-tax penalties down the line.
On the court? This deal certainly makes some sense for the Cavaliers. Harden is putting up his best scoring numbers since he was a Houston Rocket, and adding Harden to a lineup with Donovan Mitchell really ups the scoring oomph. Mitchell and Harden are both best with the ball in their hands, so the fit might take a while to form (or might not form at all,) but Cleveland is just eight games behind Detroit in the East. There's no alpha dog among the Pistons, Knicks, and Celtics at the top of the conference standings, making this swing by Cleveland an admirable one.
Admirable, but still not the side of the deal I'd want to be on here. Right now, James Harden is a better player than Darius Garland, of course. But Harden is a decade older than Garland for starters. Plus, the lefty has a questionable record come playoff time, so adding Harden in the hopes he fuels a lengthy run in the postseason might be wishful thinking.
Garland has battled injuries his entire career, playing in 70+ games just once in six seasons. This season, he's only played in 26 of the Cavs' 51 games. But he's made two All-Star teams, and we've seen him turn in star-level seasons. His ability to do that took a hit when Cleveland added Mitchell to act as the centerpiece on offense, but Garland can be one of the league's best point guards. And he's only 26 years old. For the rest of the season, Harden will probably out-produce his counterpart in this trade, but I'd rather take Garland's potential to provide more long-term value. | | TODAY's LINEUP | Keep An Eye On... | | New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, or at least his right (aka throwing) shoulder.
Maye is dealing with an injury, and sure, heading into the Super Bowl, what player isn't? But I don't know, this seems like a big deal! Maye has admitted that part of the problem is simply getting this far into the season, blaming "30 weeks straight of throwing" as the issue. The Pats listed their star as a "limited participant" on injury reports for Wednesday and Thursday, sparking questions about his readiness for Sunday. He'll play, but there really is no cure for something like a dead arm, to say nothing if Maye is fighting through a more serious injury.
A QB with a bum throwing shoulder certainly seems like chum in the water for the Seattle Seahawks' ferocious defense. Mike Macdonald's group tied for seventh in the NFL in team sacks this season, so they know how to get after opposing passers. Maye has ample time to recover, but this definitely bears watching - if Maye really is limited in any way, New England's going to have a difficult time finding the end zone. | Who will be Atlanta's Week 1 starter at QB next season? | | | | |
